Sorrento rarely offers a deep-water cruise berth beside the town. Most ships anchor in the bay and tender passengers ashore to Marina Piccola, the landing at the base of the cliffs.

Check the ship’s daily programme for tender numbers, priority tickets and last tender times. Queues form at both ends of the day when several ships share the anchorage.

Sorrento is an excellent base for a town day once you are above the pier. Pompeii, Positano, Amalfi and Capri are separate full-day journeys requiring road or ferry time and different timing discipline.

From the tender pier, follow signs toward the lifts and stair routes that climb to town level. The distance is short; the vertical effort is real, especially in summer heat.

If your excursion includes Positano or Amalfi, coastal restaurants can be busy at peak hours — protect free time rather than chasing the longest menu.

Carry some euro cash for small cafés while expecting cards to work in most visitor-facing spots.

Taxis wait near town and often near the tender area when ships are in. Show the driver Marina Piccola or your ship name for the return — “the port” alone confuses visitors between marinas.

The Amalfi Drive toward Positano and Amalfi is scenic and slow. Plan 40–60 minutes or more each way depending on traffic; map-app optimism is not a cruise plan.

Pompeii typically needs 45–70 minutes by road each way. Capri requires ferry schedules from Sorrento plus island transfers — treat it as a full maritime day.

Organised shore excursions exist partly to coordinate waiting vehicles, ferry legs and all-aboard buffers that DIY chains struggle to match.

Start by clearing the tender and reaching Piazza Tasso before midday heat peaks. Explore old-town lanes and a viewpoint while energy is high.

Take a proper lunch in town, then spend the afternoon browsing or revisiting favourite streets without another long transfer.

Keep the final hour ashore oriented toward Marina Piccola so an unexpected tender queue does not threaten all-aboard.

Confirm all-aboard time — earlier than published departure — and the last tender if published separately.

For a Sorrento town day, aim to be at the tender area 60–90 minutes before all-aboard.

For Pompeii, Amalfi Coast or Capri days, the operator should plan with road or ferry contingency. A best-case journey time is not an adequate return plan.

Independent travellers are responsible for reaching the ship. If a long coastal or island trip does not leave a conservative margin, choose Sorrento itself instead.
